Does Oxalic Acid in Greens Cause Kidney Stones #128

The kidney acts as a filter for blood, removing waste products from the body and helping regulate the levels of chemicals important for body function. The urine drains from the kidney into the bladder through a narrow tube called the ureter. When the bladder fills and there is an urge to urinate, the bladder empties through the urethra, a much wider tube than the urethra.

Treatment

Drinking more fluids. You need to drink enough water to keep your urine clear, about 8 to 10 glasses a day. Try to drink 2 glasses of water every 2 hours while you are awake. If you have kidney, heart, or liver disease and are on fluid restrictions, talk with your doctor before increasing your fluid intake.

Watchful waiting is the most common treatment, as most kidney stones are small enough to pass on their own. Mayo Clinic offers three minimally invasive ways of removing troublesome kidney stones. Mayo Clinic evaluates each patient’s need for kidney stone treatment, and follows up to ensure measures are being taken to prevent additional stones from forming.

A simple and most important lifestyle change to prevent stones is to drink more liquids—water is best. Someone who tends to form stones should try to drink enough liquids throughout the day to produce at least 2 quarts of urine in every 24-hour period.

In the past, people who form calcium stones were told to avoid dairy products and other foods with high calcium content. Recent studies have shown that foods high in calcium, including dairy products, may help prevent calcium stones. Taking calcium in pill form, however, may increase the risk of developing stones.

ESWL (extracorporeal means “outside the body”) is a procedure that uses shock waves to smash the kidney stone into tiny pieces that can pass from the body. It is usually used for smaller stones. In ESWL, the patient is placed in a large tub of water. The urologist locates the kidney stone with an X-ray or ultrasound. Shock waves are generated and travel through the water to the kidney area and crush the stone.

Ureteroscopy procedure is performed when the stone is located in the ureter. The urologist slips an instrument called a ureteroscope through the urethra (the tube through which the urine passes) into the bladder and up to the ureter. The urologist can then remove the stone with a device that resembles a cage or use ultrasound shock waves to pulverize the stone.

Thiazides, water pills (diuretics), are sometimes prescribed to reduce high levels of urinary calcium (hypercalciuria) and to increase urinary volume. Patients with hypercalciuria who do not respond to thiazide therapy may be prescribed orthophosphates o reduce calcium absorption and may be given dietary calcium restrictions.

Patients should not reduce their calcium intake unless their physicians advise them to do so.

Hypocitraturia (low level of urinary citrate) usually requires a prescribed supplement, such as potassium citrate. The dosage depends on the level of urinary citrate, which is determined by the 24-hour urine test. Patients with renal tubular acidosis usually respond well to treatment with potassium citrate supplements. Citrus fruits and lemon juice also can be used as supplements.

In Herbs of the Earth by Mary Carse, she lists under stones and gravel in the urinary system pertaining to kidneys and the bladder, that these are rare where apple cider or vinegar are a staple of the diet. (I note that this reference does not state whether the vinegar needs to be apple cider vinegar, but the brands in the health food aisle are less processed.

The woman I work for now, says her daughter passed a kidney stone (identified by a doctor) after taking apple cider vinegar. The Braggs brand found in the health food aisle suggests to take 2 teaspoons in water with honey 3 times daily and there is another organic brand called Spectrum.

In In Apple Cider Vinegar Health System by the Braggs 1985 or 34th printing, it states on p 21:

A large number of kidney stones are of the type that can be dissolved with cider vinegar.

Use cider vinegar freely on salads consisting of cabbage, carrots, celery, beet root, tomatoes, green onions, parsley, cucumbers. Eat prunes, raisins, apples, at the same meal with the cider vinegar on the salad.

Note that neither citation above guarantees that this will work for you, but it may.

  4. Just imagine someone putting a jackhammer on your back for an hour or two… and you'll have some idea.
It is not unbearable, but is painful. It often leaves the skin bruised in the area that was treated. I can't really say it is more or less painful than a stint, but I do think the sonic treatment is a more familiar pain. We know what it feels like to be pummeled, but not so much what it feels like to have our urethra scraped up.

You can resume regular activity shortly after. Instead of passing a large stone, you will pass little granules. The only thing though, is once you have had one kidney stone, you will always be prone to them. Try to drink 8 glasses of water a day, stay away from dark soda & things high in calcium. Alcohol in moderation. Sexual activity…as long as you do not have pain, you should be fine. Hope this helps, but if you have any more questions, be sure to ask your doctor.

The shockwave treatment is done under anesthesia. You shouldn't feel anything. as for stents, sometimes yes, sometimes no.

I don't know much about that. But I've had kidney stones and lithotripsy.

What will keep stones from reoccurring is drinking plenty of juice and lemonade. (The lemonade is a weak acid and will keep the calcium stones from forming. But it's not a stop-gap measure. Stones will still form. However, the FREQUENCY upon which they do…? Will be lessened.)

Keeping yourself flushed with water each day will help as well. But moderate yourself.

Anything which promises to get rid of them completely should be looked upon with grave skepticism.

This IS your kidneys we are talking about here.

A kidney or renal stone is a stone in the urinary/renal system such as the kidney, ureters, bladder, etc.. A renal/kidney stone can be passed if it is not too large. A gallstone is a stone in the gallbladder or common bile duct and requires surgery for removal.
