So, you have a kidney stone but you think that you can get by without the need for medical treatment. After you have read this, you may want to think again about this idea that you have come up with and remember to ask yourself – “How long to pass a kidney stone?”Spontaneous passage of stones, or in layman’s terms, the passing of a kidney stone so that it has gone from the body, depends massively on a great many things. First of all the kind of stone that you have can make a difference and although the calcium kidney stone is the most common, there are a few other types which can cause problems if left untreated. Secondary to this, the size of the kidney stone and also the location within the body are two other vital factors for determining how long to pass a kidney stone or if it will even pass at all. It has been suggested by many medical professionals that the following two statements are true:1. Stones that are 4mm in diameter and less have almost a ninety percent chance of passing through the body naturally in a short time frame. 2. Stones that are 6mm in diameter and more only have a twenty percent chance of leaving the body naturally without complications and in a short time frame. If you are suffering from a kidney stone right now, remember that those that are under 4mm in diameter are very often too small to cause problems so that chances are if you can feel the symptoms and are in a great deal of pain, you probably have a larger kidney stone than you would think. Some people pass a kidney stone without even realizing that they have one in the first place. These are known as “silent stones” and do not cause any pain or discomfort or many other symptoms. However for those that do have symptoms and have been diagnosed with kidney stones, finding out how long to pass a kidney stone I basically a waiting game. For some people with this condition, the wait is very short, only an hour or so after they feel their first symptoms, for some it is much longer, with some around a few weeks. The generalized feel for the average time taken is around seven to ten days but this is not a guideline and just an approximation that has been made. Everybody is different and they will react to the kidney stones in very different ways so although for one person it will only take a little while to pass, others may take too long and need medical intervention, especially if it is causing complications. Working out how long to pass a kidney stone is something that cannot be guaranteed, even if this is your 100th kidney stone – the likelihood is that each one will have been different and taken different times to pass. As long as you are taking pain relief that your doctor should prescribe, the pain should not be too pronounced and most doctors will encourage you to “catch” your kidney stone so that it can be analyzed and this is one of the best ways to know that you have actually passed it. They did a CT scan and said that it was kidney stones, gave me painkillers and antibiotics and sent me home. Every day since then I’ve been having pain off and on and will soon be out of pain medication. The doctors in the ER did not tell me how long this would last so I’d like to know when to expect this pain to stop.

I just had a kidney stone and passed it. 3 days of Hell. I’ve read a ton about how they form and the details of passing them. But I haven’t been able to find out how long it takes to form them.

Does it take months? Days? I’m trying to piece together why mine may have come to pass (pun intended) out of nowhere, with no history of kidney stones and according to the doctors, no others kicking around in the kidneys.

The week before my stone came I had been heavy on the exercise and probably light on the water intake. I had also been heavy on the protein and red meat. If a week is all it takes to form one, then that week would explain it … but how long DO they take to form?

They did blood tests and said that it wasn’t affecting my kidneys so didn’t bother doing a scan as it was probably a small one. They said to go home and drink lots of water and it will eventually pass. Well it hasn’t. I am not in severe pain, just now and again I get a sharp reminder pain from my groin. Is this normal to take this long? I think I will go and see my doctor to make sure but, wanted to know if anyone else had experienced a kidney stone taking this long to pass?
