  • Cornell University’s medical school is called Weill Cornell Medicine. It was founded in 1898 in New York City. With just over 400 students, Weill Cornell is actually one of the most selective medical schools in the country. It is located in the “science corridor” with several other research institutions including Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Institute and Rockefeller University.

Weill Cornell is well-known for becoming the first American medical school to be situated outside the country when it opened location in Qatar in 2004 and the Weill Bugando Medical College is also being developed in Mwanza, Tanzania. Weill Cornell is also famous for helping Intelligent Medical Objects develop a tool for medical billing and for SNOMED terminology.

The primary teaching hospital for Weill Cornell students is New York Presbyterian Hospital, which is shared with the Columbia University Medical Center. (Despite the shared primary teaching hospital, the two medical schools remain completely autonomous of each other.) The school is also famous for the Hospital for Special Surgery and the Methodist Hospital in Houston. Other hospital affiliations include Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, New York Hospital in Queens, and the Brooklyn Hospital Center.

Students take the Medicine, Patients, and Society course, which places them in doctors’ offices at least once a week. After their first year, students are often encouraged to travel and work abroad. In fact, more than 50% of students in their last year participate in international electives. Many of these classes are offered in third-world countries, where students can take advantage of having experience in the field.

Some of the most popular residency programs include emergency medicine, pediatrics, orthopedic surgery, neurology, and internal medicine. There are also opportunities for joint degrees at Weill Cornell Medical College. Students can complete Ph.D. programs in biomedical research and education to help form a more fully-realized foundation of research combined with patient care.

Many students also participate in nonprofit organizations, including Planetree Alliance. This group is an association of healthcare institutions where patients are helped to feel more comfortable with the services they get from medical professionals.
