Before you even start thinking pink or blue, you have some important decisions to make. Expectant parents have a variety of options for giving birth in Bergen County, either at community hospitals that tout home-like birthing rooms and concierge service, or specialized hospitals that offer both amenities and intensive care for women with high-risk pregnancies and preemies under a certain weight.

Bergen County does not have any birthing centers. A very small percentage of women deliver at home in Bergen County using a midwife that they have located on their own.

What comes first – the doctor or the hospital?

If you want to give birth at a certain hospital, you must find a doctor who has privileges there.

Remember, too, that you must consider an ob/gyn’s entire medical practice when choosing a doctor. If your personal doctor is not on call when you are about to deliver, your baby will likely be delivered by one of his/her associates in the practice.

A woman in the final stages of labor is probably not paying attention to the room’s décor. But in the recovery mode, when the new mom wants some pampering and visitors arrive to gush at the new baby, the amenities become important, especially if there are special needs based on traditions, religion or privacy.
